Industrial Planetary Gearbox Replacement Checklist

A replacement proposal should reproduce the machine’s functional duty and physical interfaces. Similar catalogue names or rated ratios are not sufficient to establish drop-in interchangeability.

Identify the existing gearbox

Collect clear nameplate photos, manufacturer model, serial or drawing reference and the existing mounting orientation.

Record operating requirements

Provide motor power and speed, actual output speed, continuous/peak torque, reversals, start frequency, environmental conditions and temperature history.

Measure external interfaces

Check output and input shafts, fits, keyway or spline, hollow shaft/shrink disc, bolt hole pattern, flanges, centerline heights, outer envelope, shaft position and supporting structure.

Evaluate the mechanical and thermal duty

The proposed unit should meet mechanical torque and power limits as well as continuous thermal duty. Any change in installation position can alter cooling and lubrication requirements.

Agree the modification boundary

Decide whether couplings, adapters, baseplates, motor mounts or guards can be changed. Specify which dimensions must remain identical.

Approve the final drawing

Compare a dimensioned drawing of the proposed unit with the installed machine and obtain a project-specific engineering approval before manufacture.

Frequently asked questions

Does the same nominal ratio guarantee replacement?

No. Actual ratio, shaft line, mounting and thermal duty must all be checked.

What if the original drawing is unavailable?

Collect calibrated external measurements and multiple views of the existing unit before engineering review.
