How to Select a P-Series Industrial Planetary Gearbox
A sound planetary gearbox selection separates the actual operating point from the individual limits printed in a catalogue. Follow the sequence below to prepare a useful engineering enquiry.
1. Establish operating duty
Identify the driven machine, duty cycle, ambient conditions, starts and stops, steady torque and peak torque. State whether the load is continuous, intermittent or reversing.
2. Determine speed and ratio
Calculate the required ratio from actual input speed and target output speed. Use the selected unit’s actual ratio when predicting the delivered output speed.
3. Check mechanical capacity
Check the required torque and input power against the approved operating region. Do not assume that a catalogue’s maximum torque and maximum input power can always occur at the same point.
4. Check thermal and lubrication capacity
Compare actual transmitted power with a thermal limit for the correct installation orientation, airflow, temperature and duty factor. Verify whether an oil pump, tank or other accessory is required.
5. Verify physical interfaces
Confirm coupling, shafts, mounting holes, flange fits, shaft reactions, foundation alignment, space, access and the gearbox drawing.
6. Request a project-specific confirmation
Send the completed operating profile and interface drawing. Obtain the model-specific performance and installation confirmation before procurement.
Frequently asked questions
Why are mechanical and thermal ratings checked separately?
Because a gearbox can transmit a short-term mechanical load while the continuous heat-removal capability is lower.
Do I need the actual ratio?
Yes, particularly when output speed must be accurately controlled.
