Troubleshooting is faster when the symptom is tied to a location and operating condition. Use a structured sequence to separate lubrication, cooling, alignment, bearing, mounting and gear-mesh problems instead of replacing parts from the first symptom alone.
Start with the symptom location and operating condition
Record when the symptom occurs: cold start, steady load, high process load, coast-down or only at a particular speed. Note whether the sound or temperature is concentrated near the input, gear mesh area, output/thrust end, pump or cooling system.
Abnormal bearing noise or temperature
Possible contributors include inadequate or degraded lubrication, circulation problems, contamination, alignment error or bearing damage. Check oil condition and delivery first, then compare temperature and sound between bearing locations before opening the gearbox.
Uneven gear-mesh noise or vibration
Knocking, cyclic mesh noise or changing vibration can be associated with alignment, tooth contact, loosened mounting or internal damage. Confirm external fasteners, coupling condition and alignment before assuming the gears themselves are the only cause.
High oil temperature
Check oil level and condition, pump/circulation operation, filters and the cooling system. Excess oil, insufficient oil, aged oil, contamination and restricted cooling can all raise temperature. Use the approved stop/alarm thresholds for the exact gearbox documentation.
Leakage
Identify whether the leak is from a shaft seal, joint, plug, fitting or breather area. Check oil level, breather condition and housing pressure causes as well as the seal itself. Replacing a seal without correcting an underlying pressure or alignment problem can lead to repeat leakage.
Do not continue through a rapidly worsening symptom
A sudden increase in temperature, vibration, metallic noise or loss of lubrication flow should trigger a controlled stop according to the approved IOM. Continued operation can turn a correctable system problem into internal damage.
