How to Measure a Replacement Gearbox Without Original Drawings

Replacement work can begin with the nameplate, mounting datums, input/output interfaces, available envelope and actual duty. The objective is not to copy appearance; it is to define every boundary that affects connection and performance.

Photograph the complete unit, nameplate, input, output, feet or flange, lubrication points, adjacent equipment and available space. Measure foot holes, centre height, shaft diameters and extensions, keyways, flange pilot and bolt circle, connected components and removal space. Add the actual load, hours, starts, shock, shaft loads, environment and failure history.
