Gearbox Overheating: Common Causes and Checks

Abnormal gearbox temperature can be caused by overload, incorrect lubrication, misalignment, excessive input speed, restricted cooling, bearing problems or internal damage. Diagnosis should begin with operating conditions before disassembly.

Diagnostic order

  1. Measure actual load and output speed.
  2. Confirm oil quantity and mounting position.
  3. Check ambient temperature and ventilation.
  4. Inspect alignment and external shaft loads.
  5. Check bearing/noise/vibration behavior.
  6. Escalate to internal inspection if operating checks do not explain the temperature rise.

Avoid diagnosing by touch alone; trend measured temperature whenever possible.

How this applies to R, F, K and S gear units

The same engineering principle applies across the CHINFAR four-series platform, but the mechanical layout changes: R is inline/near-inline, F is parallel-shaft, and K/S are right-angle families. Use the principle to define the requirement, then select a configuration within the appropriate family.
